Call for Town to be 'more vibrant' for liner visitors

'A MORE vibrant St Peter Port', including retailers opening more on both days of the weekend, would encourage cruise ship visitors to spend more, according to Committee for Economic Development member Jennifer Merrett.

Her comments come following the release of survey results which show the numbers of cruise visitors continue to climb, with 2016 seeing 132,949 passengers coming ashore and a spending increase of 7% to nearly £4.2m.

Despite this, the island still has one of the lowest average spending figures for passengers in Europe, which Deputy Merrett has said can be improved by St Peter Port having a more 'vibrant' atmosphere when the visitors are in the island.

'The majority of cruise visits come over weekends,' she said.

'If we can get a more vibrant St Peter Port with our seafront Sundays and so on – it is up to retailers now to get people in and make sales.'
