MSG struggling to cope with high patient demand

ORTHOPAEDIC patients face up to an eight-month wait to have an operation, as the Medical Specialist Group continues to struggle with a high demand.

The group's annual report for 2016, released today, said the department remained extremely busy and was therefore behind its contractual waiting time of eight weeks.

While waiting times for out-patient appointments were 'generally within contract', the waiting time for operations was around three months – with the exception of those needing lower limb procedures, who had to wait around eight months.

To try and cope better with the demand, MSG said it had successfully recruited an additional orthopaedic surgeon, who would start in June to take the number of posts up to four.
