PC Marcus Lewis's actions were recognised at last night's Law Enforcement Awards, which also saw the work of other police staff and community initiatives recognised.

He was presented with the Chief Inspector Richard Mauger Award for Outstanding Achievement.

PC Lewis and PC Mike Callister, who was also commended, were called to a property in Naftiaux Estate in April last year following an assault. At the front door they were met by a relative of the offender, who initially refused them entry.

Using his lawful authority as a police officer to gain access, PC Lewis came face to face with the offender, who was standing concealed behind a door with an axe raised above his head.

PC Lewis took out his pepper spray, which he used in the suspect's face, before he and PC Callister were able to restrain and handcuff him.

'At first it seemed a very normal, routine job – a relative wanting to protect the suspect is normal,' said PC Lewis.
