Alderney States to be asked to back review into health care

ALDERNEY politicians are being asked to back the findings of an independent review of the island's health and social care needs at their next States meeting.

The review, carried out by Professor Philip Wilson of the Centre for Rural Health at Aberdeen University, was commissioned in the wake of the inquiry into Dr Rory Lyons, who was wrongly suspected of playing a part in the deaths of four of his patients.

The report made 16 recommendations, including giving a full apology to Dr Lyons, and outlined four different models for health care delivery in the island, including the adoption of an NHS-style system that is free at the point of entry.

However, it was criticised by Policy & Resources president Gavin St Pier for being 'heavily reliant' on 'anecdotal' evidence.

Alderney's politicians, however, praised the report and at the States meeting they will be asked to endorse its findings and impress on the States of Guernsey the 'urgent need' to implement its recommendations.

James Dent, chairman of Alderney's Policy and Finance Committee, wrote on the Billet: 'The States of Alderney welcomes Professor Wilson's report.

'We consider it very thorough.

'That the report is to some extent reliant on anecdote does not detract from its conclusions.'
