Chamber under fire over population regime claims

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE has been accused of making 'inaccurate claims' about the new population regime as the Home Affairs president warns about a 'world where alternative facts are the norm'.

In an email sent to Chamber's president Martyn Dorey, Deputy Mary Lowe hit back at comments made by the body about a new list of 236 jobs which will offer more certainty for employers bringing staff from off-island.

The permit list is part of new population controls being introduced in April.

'I absolutely respect the right of Chamber and its members to comment, challenge and lobby,' she said.

'However, I am understandably keen to ensure that Chamber uses its important position within the business community to further debate, not cloud it with inaccurate claims.

'We live in a world where alternative facts have become the norm in certain political environments.

'I am sure that you and the businesses you represent would agree that it is vital to have accuracy around the provisions of the new law and the policy framework supporting it.'
