An imagery replacement programme, which has been funded by States capital, will allow for up-to-date technology to be introduced.

A new CT scanner, costing £500,000, and a new MRI scanner, which will cost £1m., should be in place by the end of this year.

A total of 13 new ultrasound scanners have been bought at a cost of £500,000 and will arrive at the beginning of April.

Radiology services manager Alistair Richards said the new equipment would have an important role to play in the future health care of islanders.

'We are looking to try and do less radiation and all the new equipment will play a part in that,' he said.

'We are looking to use more MRIs, as that is using magnetic forces, and also ultrasound.

'The biggest demand is for MRI scans.'
