Retailers look set to pass on 9p a litre rise in milk price

SUPERMARKETS and shops are saying they will be putting their milk price up to match the higher wholesale price.

This will mean milk will cost £1.27 a litre, rather than the current price of £1.18 which most retailers use as their standard price.

Retailers are free to adapt the price as they see fit, following the States' removal of a fixed price.

Despite that, the price of milk has stayed the same at nearly every retailer across the board.

The wholesale price is set to rise by approximately 7.5% on 2 April. Most retailers have said they would put up their prices to cover the cost.

The Channel Island Co-operative Society said it was aware of the imminent wholesale price increase from the Dairy. 'If costs increase, our retail price will have to move consequently,' a spokesman said.

Ian Burdekin, branch manager of Waitrose Admiral Park, said: 'We have noted the Guernsey Dairy's announcement to increase the wholesale price of milk in April.

'We will be discussing this with our suppliers in due course to establish what the best course of action is for our business and our customers.'
