Daniel Breton, 30, of 26, Sausmarez Mill Estate, St Martin's, admitted a charge of assault.

The Magistrate's Court was told how the social worker had gone to the home on a pre-arranged visit to speak to the defendant's partner.

Judge Graeme McKerrell said social workers had a difficult job and were often unappreciated in what they did.

It was a person's duty to work with them and not against them. Social workers needed protection in the execution of their duties. The defendant had failed to engage with social services and with the Probation Service during these proceedings by not turning up for one appointment.

A four-month prison sentence was imposed.
