CHANGES are being made locally to accommodate the new 12-sided UK one pound coins, which came into circulation yesterday.

It was announced last month that Guernsey £1 coins were being taken out of circulation along with their round UK counterparts.

The old coin will remain legal tender until 15 October.

Islanders are encouraged to exchange both Guernsey and UK £1 coins at high street banks.

Guernsey £1 notes will continue to be issued alongside circulation of the new coins.

Guernsey Airport said it was in the process of updating its car park payment systems to accept these, but at present could accept only the old round pound coins.

Airport general manager Colin Le Ray said new car park pay-stations would be installed later this year.
