'Cemetery fly-tipping shows lack of respect'

THE sanctity of a graveyard has been disrespected by whoever dumped builders' rubble at La Croix, St Peter's Cemetery Committee secretary Marguerite Talmage has said.

A trailer-load of plaster, soil and rubbish was tipped at the site at Route du Longfrie and was discovered by the volunteer committee when carrying out an inspection.

Mrs Talmage said she was very disappointed by the person's actions.

'This is private, parish property, which is a very personal place for people and the sanctity of it should be respected,' she said.

'We will also need to remove it now, which will be a cost to the parish.'

The fly-tipping is being reported to police.

A chain was installed on the entrance to the graveyard last year, to try to discourage people driving to the graves unless they needed to, to keep the graveyard peaceful.

Mrs Talmage said they did not want to lock it, as it was important for people with reduced mobility to be able to access the site.

'So whoever dumped this, drove to the cemetery and took the chain down to get in,' she said.
