Appliance giant Whirlpool, which owns Hotpoint, Indesit and Creda, issued a safety alert in November 2015, admitting there was a safety issue in some models caused when excess fluff touches the heating element.

At the time, it advised people that they could continue to use their dryer while waiting for the modification, providing it was not left unattended.

But, in February, it told customers to stop using them completely.

Valpys is the only local Hotpoint-approved repair agent and has had four of its engineers carrying out the modifications needed on the local machines since 2015.

As of the end of February, more than 1,000 still needed to be repaired.

Speaking yesterday, director Nick Lawlor said since then his team had now cut that down by roughly half.

'We are now expecting them to be done within the next few months, hopefully by the end of May.

'We are making good progress and having the engineers from the UK has really helped to speed things up.'
