Unite leader visits with pensions fight promise
UNITE'S general secretary will promise full support for Guernsey's public sector workers over pension arrangements when he visits Guernsey today.
Len McCluskey said he would pledge to continue the fight for 'proper employment rights for workers across the Channel Islands'.
Mr McCluskey, who is standing to be re-elected to the top post in Britain and Ireland's largest union, will attend mass meetings with States of Guernsey and Jersey workers.
Speaking ahead of the visits, he said: 'I always enjoy visiting the Channel Islands to meet Unite members and talk to them about the work of their union.
'Now there is a lot of anger among our members in Guernsey, who have overwhelmingly rejected the States of Guernsey's attempts to rob them of their hard-earned pensions by trying to force them to pay more and work longer.
'Unite is the only union to take on the States of Guernsey to protect thousands of workers' pensions and, while I'm not opposed to sitting down with the employer to explore options, the fact is that our members, who have been planning for their retirement, feel cheated.
'I will stand shoulder to shoulder with them and Unite will continue to fight for them, both legally and with industrial action if necessary.'
