BEING presented with the British Empire Medal was a moment Lisa Johnston said she will remember forever.

She was given the award by Lt-Governor Vice-Admiral Sir Ian Corder at a ceremony held at Government House last night.

Mrs Johnston, chair of amateur dramatic and operatic group Gadoc, was awarded the BEM in the Queen's New Year Honours List for 2017, for services to the arts. The presentation was watched by her family, friends and colleagues.

She was also taken by surprise as after she was given the award, members of Gadoc, who were at the ceremony, sang Seasons of Love from the musical Rent.

As Gadoc's director of musicals, Mrs Johnston negotiated the amateur rights to the full stage version of Les Miserables, which is believed to have been only the second time the show has been staged by an amateur company outside either the West End or Broadway.

On receiving the BEM, she said it was 'overwhelming' but also very nice to share the moment with so many people.

'It is very humbling. Sharing it with so many people who have supported me over so many years – it needs all of those people for what we do.

'I can't thank Guernsey enough.'

Anyone may be considered for awards in the Order of the British Empire, which includes the British Empire Medal.

Application forms are available in Guernsey from the Bailiff's Office.
