The committee was responding to comments made by parents who can be faced with paying almost double for trips during the school holidays compared with travelling during term-time.

Staggering term times to be outside those in the UK was one suggestion put forward to alleviate the situation.

Education, Sport & Culture said it did vary term dates wherever possible but it could not deviate entirely from those in the UK.

'The school year is divided into three roughly equal terms which in turn are divided into roughly equal half terms.

This is to ensure the optimum delivery of education in equal blocks,' said a committee spokesman.
