Eight richest people in Bailiwick add £532m. in a year

THE Bailiwick's eight richest residents have accumulated an extra estimated £532m. between them in the last year, according to the latest Sunday Times Rich List.

Published

There are five billionaires in the Channel Islands, three in the Bailiwick.

Of the rise, £200m. is attributed to Brecqhou owners Sir David and Sir Frederick Barclay, who top the list with an estimated wealth of £7.2bn.

Jersey's Sir Philip and Lady Green are second with £2.787bn, a drop of £433m.

This is largely down to the fall-out from the collapse of BHS, the department store chain he owned previously, which went into administration just more than a year ago.

After a long row, Sir Philip agreed in February to pay £363m. to rescue its pension scheme, but still faces calls to be stripped of his knighthood.

Robert Watts, compiler of The Sunday Times Rich List, said: 'This year's larger than ever Rich List lays bare how the fortunes of Britain's richest 1,000 people have fared amid the

astonishing events of the past 12 months.

'With their stunning beaches, steadier pace of life and community of financial advisers, it's not surprising that many of the UK's wealthiest people choose to settle in the Channel Islands.

'But it's wrong to think of the islands as a place entrepreneurs move to in order to slip down a gear. Many of those in our list, including Douglas and Dame Mary Perkins and the Barclay brothers, continue to build their fortunes from here.'
