i-drive with John Bichard

Published

John previously worked for Guernsey Post Office from leaving school until 2002 when he went delivering for eight years then took up taxi driving full time in 2010.

In his spare time he enjoys reading, coffee breaks in his shared garage, eating out and travelling. 'Motorsport weekends are most enjoyable and I am a big supporter of British Touring Car Championship meetings. I hope to spend holidays walking in various locations, around the globe, in the future although I need to get fit to keep up with my lady.'

What are you driving at the moment?

A 2003 MGZR 105, a 2013 Peugeot 5008 Taxi and a 1977 Triumph GT Spitfire 1493cc.

What was your best car and why?

My Spitfire as I made it into what it is (with a lot of help) and can legally go topless every time. As it is part Triumph/GT6 with transmission and brakes from a GT6 with original Spitfire chassis and bodywork and a rebuilt engine, it's not a full specification Spitfire, so therefore it's one of a kind.

Do you consider yourself to be a good driver?

As a professional, considerate driver since I passed my test, yes!

Who keeps your car clean?

Only me, by bucket and microfiber glove, the taxi is cleaned at least weekly, the others when they are dirty.

What do you keep in your glove box?

A shopping bag, mints, microfiber cloths and pen and paper.

What frustrates you on the roads?

Drivers who dither at junctions and filters. Pedestrians who think cars can stop immediately, when they step off pavements without even checking it's safe to cross.

Do you have a favourite sound-track to play while you drive?

Blues Brothers 2000 film soundtrack.

What would be your dream car and why?

A multi-coloured Tuk Tuk taxi so I can show visitors the nooks and crannies of our lovely island.

If you could take your car on a dream journey where would it be?

Through Europe to China, with a very patient passenger

What would make driving a more pleasant experience for you?

To ask all drivers/riders to use correct lights when appropriate and turn off fog lights when not appropriate.
