British firms have seen a huge increase in the export of goods including Brussels sprouts, Christmas lights, chestnuts and turkeys, new figures show.

Overseas sales of wine, cheese, toys and video games have also jumped, with export markets including Hong Kong and Ireland.

Figures for the last three months of 2012 showed a 2,000% increase in exports of Brussels sprouts compared with the previous quarter, and a 1,183% rise in sales of geese.

UK Trade & Investment, the government department that promotes exports, said it helped almost 30,000 firms sell goods abroad last year.

Chief executive Crispin Simon said: "The Made in Britain brand is sought after across the world."
