MIKE WILESMITH seized his opportunity and produced a commanding run to win the third FNB Cross Country League race comfortably over the L’Ancresse Stonecrusher Course.

With training colleague and previous series leader Steve Dawes focusing his attention on a superb win in the Jersey Half Marathon, eyes were on how Wilesmith would approach the local six-mile event and whether a resurgent Will Bodkin would mount a serious challenge.

As it turned out, Bodkin, an Island Games 800m runner in 2011, ran a fine race but on this day was no match for Wilesmith, who took control in the first mile and steadily drew clear to complete the three laps in 33min. 56sec. with a winning margin of over 45 seconds.

Bodkin initially chased Wilesmith, but was caught by Mat Dorrian and then Alan Rowe and a fascinating race within a race unfurled.
