Neves' Games snub

KRISTINA NEVES will not be allowed to defend her NINE Island Games swimming titles – because Guernsey swimming won’t pick her.

The British international, pictured, who is one of the island’s funded elite via the Sports Commission’s Rising Stars programme, wants to swim in Bermuda next year, but because she did not initially commit, she has been told she has to stay at home.

Defending their decision, Chris Butt, president of the umbrella body Gasa, said: ‘Kristina was given every opportunity to register her intent to take  part in the Island Games some 12 months ago, and it was disappointing when the association received correspondence stating that she had no intention of going to Bermuda.

‘It is, therefore, unfortunate that under the terms and conditions laid down by Gasa, that she became no longer eligible for consideration for team selection.’

Hardly a snub - she didn't want to commit in case something better came along, and now that it hasn't she wants to get back into the games.

I agree with the GASA stance here.

I agree with GASA on this one. You can't have your cake and eat it It wouldn't be fair on the rest of the team to allow Kristina to compete in Bermuda now. She had the opportunity and squandered it and I hope GASA stick to their guns. Best of luck to team GSY - they'll still do us proud.

How can this be a "Neves games snub" surely she is the one who snub the games by saying she was not available.

If it was Commonwealth Games one would think that she was hoping to get a call up for England but if that failed she would fall back on Guernsey, she needs to sort out what she wants either live and represent Guernsey, or represent who ever but don,t expect others who have trained and worked hard because you said you were unavailable to now be left behind, because something better did not work out for you.
