A NEW £14m. generator will be helping power the island within weeks and Guernsey Electricity is planning to buy another.

The 360-tonne piece of equipment was brought to Guernsey at the start of September.

But with four kilometres of pipes and 20 kilometres of cable to connect, it has taken some time to get it ready.

Project manager Tom Woodford said the plan was to turn it on for the first time after Christmas and run it for a 30-day continuous trial, before it comes into service.

‘It is smaller than our older generators, but much more efficient,’ he said.

At over £28,000,000 for the two that will have to be one hell of an efficiency saving?

Let's see some figures please to back it up?

How long will it last? http://ratonrange.com/power-unit-examined-after-explosion-city-purchased-troubled-wartsila-in-ar-p4149-1.htm

‘It is smaller than our older generators, but much more efficient’

So presumably the savings from the new-found efficiency will be passed on to customers?

Will electric charges be going up yet again to pay for the second one?

Many of us soon won't be able to afford electric if this continues

Before any more expansion of the power station is carried out, with predicted sea level rises on the cards.

Would it not be prudent to look at putting the power station somewhere a bit higher?

Or am i missing something :)

Vinny - fat chance, prices will go up yet again. Efficiency saving = profit not customer gain

Cousin Vinny

@Guernseyman - Of course. And hey ho, if it breaks there's no need to worry as we'll foot the bill too!
