THE new professional at St Pierre Park Golf Club wants every child in the island to have the chance to try golf.

Steve Wilford, pictured, is taking over the reins from Bob Lilley, who leaves next month, and there is an obvious enthusiasm in the way the man from Nottingham is approaching his first head pro job.

'I just want to try and get as many juniors into golf as possible,' said the 26-year-old.

'In Nottingham I did a lot of inner-city golf coaching, giving kids the chance to play golf. We taught over 2,000 kids a couple of summers ago and if one of those takes it up, it's a bonus.

'I never had access to that when I was growing up and I do not want to let kids go without the opportunity.'

It was through his own curiosity he started out in the sport.
