Simpson departs Doha on the up

DESPITE seeing his World Championships run end at the last-16 stage, Chris Simpson can still look back at one of the best weeks of his career thus far in Doha.

The 25-year-old unseeded Sarnian, pictured, had never progressed beyond the opening round of the tournament before, but bucked that trend in style as he eventually reached the third round.

That included an epic five-set victory over ninth seed Lauren Jan Anjema from the Netherlands, which set Simpson up a clash against third seed Gregory Gaultier in yesterday's third round.

And despite his tournament coming to an end with a 34min. 11-7, 11-6, 11-4 defeat to the Frenchman, it is the nature of the victory over Anjema that will live long in his memory.
