STEVE DAWES cruised to victory in tough conditions yesterday in the traditional Boxing Day cross-country.

With a strong south-westerly wind blowing and some extremely muddy spots along the 4.75-mile L'Ancresse course starting and finishing at Rocque Balan, it was never going to be a day for records.

However, the conditions did not deter 118 starters from turning out, nearly 80 competing over the full course while the juniors and novices ran a shortened 2.75-mile version.

Dawes, pictured, however, was the class male in the field and he dominated from the off, quickly opening a lead that kept growing throughout the race before he crossed the line in 25min. 50sec.

Arguably the run of the day, though, came from first woman Louise Perrio, who finished second overall in an excellent 27-42.
