MOTOR racing and football. Comparing them is the proverbial chalk and cheese, night and day.

But for my sporting highlight of 2012, two events could not be split, one played out in the bright light of a summer's day, the other on a dark, misty winter's night under floodlights.

We are talking the National Hill Climb, which produced a two-hour spell of late afternoon drama and the fastest time ever up Le Val des Terres, the other a similar length cup tie football match in late winter and an atmosphere not seen at a local game for many a long year: Guernsey FC's CCL Premier Challenge Cup semi-final against Guildford City.

What unforgettable drama both.
