From CCL to telly

TONY VANCE, pictured, is past bothering answering the GFC detractors who continue to be unimpressed by the side’s unbeaten 20-match efforts in the Combined Counties League and the FA Vase.

But as he prepares his squad for the crunch clash with leaders Egham Town on Saturday, he is happy to hear that the so-called ‘glorified pub league’ in which his men play week in, week out, has produced two more professionals that were good enough to grace TV screens this week.

Two of the Cheltenham team who played Everton in the third round of the FA Cup, live on ESPN on Monday, were not so long ago in GFC’s league.

They were star winger Jermaine McGlashan, formerly of Raynes Park Vale, and the ‘big one up front played for Egham Town’.

Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports suggest that James McShane, who cancelled out Ross Allen’s goal at Molesey last weekend, could be heading back to the Ryman League where he was playing earlier this season for Chipstead.

just look at TiG whenever a GFC story comes up. It's the same comments every time - flash in the pan, killing local football, glorified pub league, not proper football fans, it was better in the 60s and so on....

Some of the arguments make valid points and may be true - time will tell though and in the meantime I don't blame Tony Vance for just getting on with the job of managing the team and trying to climb the league ladder.

why dont people just leave local sport alone guernsey has a fantastic reputation in world sport as well as county sport

just lay off if they can do any better let them try !!!!!!!!!!!

Ex Northerner

Maybe tomorrow we'll see an interview with "the big one up front that played for Egham Town". Provided of course that anyone can actually remember this superstar's name in order to contact him........

This GP coverage of the CCL is getting beyond the joke, we're now having to stomach back page reports of transfer rumours that have nothing to do with GFC, it's pathetic. I gave up buying the GP a long time ago and that policy certainly won't be changing, the reporting is woeful with a capital SH.

Thisisguernsey

Vance is quoted as saying ‘big one up front played for Egham Town’ and he is talking of Jeff Goulding who played for Cheltenham Town against Everton on Monday night in the FA Cup third round.

Actually, Egham is not the only CCL team Goulding has played for in his career as he also lists Molesey and Croydon on his CV.

Doubt they'll miss you Ex Northerner, to be honest I'm surprised you can read.

nic

it seems like the gfc sports supplement did you notice how much coverage given to gfc playing away compared to guernsey rugby who were playing at home. Obviously sports editor is fan of gfc. Just another query how the hell did gfc manage to get permission so quickly for BLACK 6 Foot fence around footes lane what an eyesore that will be in an open green area yet last year a couple of people refused permission for smaller natural looking fences on their properties this decision stinks and seems like favouritism

Matthew

@Johno - Why are you surprised Ex Northerner can read?

GFCFan

@Nic

Simple, Culture applied for and got the necessary permission. So you are blaming the wrong people...

Ex Northerner

Johno,

Ho ho ho, you're a one aren't you? Your wit is only matched by your intelligence and football knowledge.

jjlehto

Ex Northener

Why don't you give up reading TIG as well?

Ex Northerner

jjlehto

Because I find the comments from the likes of you and Johno so wonderfully entertaining.

Pumpkin

Ex northerner, I do find it strange how someone that is So fed up and not interested in the press reporting, cancelled the paper delivery etc has given up the time to visit this site, post comments on it then continue to answer other people's responses!! Sad! Clearly your interested in moaning about it as you must be one of a few people within local sport with your sights set on moaning rather then positively acting to make things better! Local sport is amazing currently that's all sports, gfc with huge home crowds, couple of thousand Internet followers will always get a lot of press reports as the media are aware of this so people want to read it!! I don't like cricket really so guess what . ....... I turn the page and don't read it! Not enter a forum and slag it off! Get a life!

Johno

Pumpkin

Very well put and put far more eloquently than I could have.

As you say if you don't like articles in the Press, turn the page. I personally have no interest in Hockey, but can see that other people do hence the Press cover it. I happen to think that overall the Press do a very good job of covering all manner of sport in the island, and no I don't work for them!

Ex Northerner

Pumpkin

My my, another dumbass who seems to think that I'll be seen off by a bit of abuse and name calling, doh!!

Johno

If you think that Pumpkin's post was eloquent then that speaks volumes!

You both seem to be suggesting that I don't like football, which couldn't be further from the truth. What I don't like is the daily bombardment from GFC's chief PR man, who also happens to be the sports editor.

JJLehto

Ex Northerner

I'm glad you are entertained!

Bpringle

No ex northerner won't be 'seen' off as he put it. Some people love to have a moan and slag off things when they are going well, known as 'keyboard warriors' when they post comments on the internet. they dont get frightened behind their computer screens, i think thats the case for ex northerner. Unfortunately I see this mentality frequently in the Channel Islands. There are some jealous people about and they don't like it when people are successful, ex northerner seems to be one.

Johno

Ex Northener

"daily bombardment" I thought you had stopped reading the GP!

Ex Northerner

Johno

I think you're confusing "reading" with "buying".

Bpringle

Keyboard warrior? Jealous? Me? I happen to have been a successful player and ardent supporter of the most successful club side in Channel Islands history, so think again old son.

Bpringle

Ex northerner - congratulations on your successful playing career, although since you refer to yourself as 'ex northerner' and without knowing your name it's hard to know if theirs any truth in it.

Also the fact you've had a 'successful playing' career and are an ardent supporter of a channel island football club hardly exempts you from being jealous old boy. I think your jealous that GFC are moving forward and playing in new competitions.

Ex Northerner

Bpringle

You can believe me or not, I couldn't care less to be honest.

I am not jealous in the slightest as regards GFC, as a player I would have had no interest whatsoever in playing for them. Using up all of my work holidays, excessive training, being seperated from my family, all of these things would lead to me not even bothering to try and get in the side (as is the case with some players at the moment).

Johno

Ex Northerner

Exactly, it's called commitment! Look it up in the dictionary.

Ex Northerner

Another pbfalla moment today I see.

bpringle

ex northerner - If you had no interest in playing for GFC then that is fine. As you said some players today may very well have chosen not to play for them and that again is fine. But the lads who are in the squad are clearly committed to it and trying to move forward and the best of luck to them, and at the end of the day is that not what its all about? The lads just want to play forward and are excited at the prospect of playing different opposition every week rather than in the same competitions against the same teams week in week out which is the case with local football.

But here you are again, keyboard warrior, Sees an opportunity to have a dig and takes it. I suppose its GFC's fault or even possibly TIG's reporting for the game being called off this time?

Come on let us know your name, purely so we can know who we've had the pleasure of having a debate with, since you had such a 'successful playing career' and support the most successful club in the channel islands - and by the way who is the most successful club your speaking off??
