DANNY RAY left some proven and experienced runners in his wake to win the first of this year's 5k in the Park Runs yesterday.

A field of more than 80 came to the start line in Saumarez Park, a mix of all ages and capabilities and a sprinkling of the elite.

But nobody impressed more than the 15-year-old Hampshire county medallist, who clocked 16min. 51sec. to win by 15sec. from veteran David Parkin, who had been runner-up in the recent 10-mile race to Steve Dawes.

After a conservative start in which Ray bode his time to settle in a leading group in four, the leaders completed the first of four 1.25k circuits of the park around the 4-30 mark.

But Ray then upped the pace and enjoyed a few metres advantage on Parkin at halfway, reached in 8-20.
