Guernsey FC 0, Chessington & Hook 2

AS TIREDNESS clearly becomes a problem in this gruelling run-in, Guernsey FC were issued a stark reminder over the perils of CCL Premier Division promotion.

The Green Lions looked spent by the end of this encounter against a solid Chessington & Hook United side who got the better of an unspectacular contest.

There have been few, if any, duller games at Footes Lane over the past two seasons and the first half in particular was uneventful, albeit with GFC on top.

But after the break, they really struggled and the relegation-threatened visitors were full value for the two-goal victory, which incredibly is GFC's biggest yet home league defeat.

Tony Vance made just four changes to a side that had been so devastating less than 18 hours earlier against Hanworth Villa - and they were below-par from the off.

In fairness, there should be little blame attached to the players who are so admirably trying to fulfil this ridiculous schedule, but there was no creativity in the first 45 minutes.

They kept the ball well enough and went forward with purpose on occasions. But even with Ross Allen starting and Craig Young attempting to provide his ammunition, the final pass was nearly always lacking.

Scott Bradford couldn't get a shot off from a great position in the only early chance of note for either side, while Young fired over a one-on-one chance after the solitary brilliant piece of creativity from Allen, a swivelled through ball.

They also had a strong shout for a Chessington red card when Tony Houghton brought down Allen and could have been adjudged as last man, but referee Alex Gray chose to issue yellow.

At the other end, Victor Martin looped a header over Chris Tardif's crossbar, before Jimmy Harding rattled the same woodwork with the best chance of the lot, moments before half-time.

That interval brought about a change from Vance.

He introduced Saturday's hat-trick hero Dave Rihoy in place of Scott Bradford and dropped Glyn Dyer slightly deeper, but it didn't change things.

If anything, Chessington got more control of the match and GFC really struggled to keep the ball, their performance also being littered with individual mistakes.

Tom Strawbridge soon entered the fray in place of Naro Zimmerman at the back and he was in the action straight away, superbly denying Daniel Harding, although the striker should have shot slightly earlier on his mazy run.

That came after Rihoy gave the ball away on the halfway line and just seconds later, another error gave Chessington a chance and this time, they took it.

With 59min. gone, Jacques Isabelle tried to dribble out from right-back and was dispossessed by Jimmy Harding, who surged to the byline and did well to dig out a cross.

It reached the back post and found Daniel Harding all alone to head into the corner, despite the best efforts of Tardif.

The ground was now eerily silent as they awaited a GFC response and Vance made his last throw of the dice, sending on Nigel Hutton for Isabelle with 20min. remaining.

Hutton would have a couple of glorious chances to level it for the hosts, his first just minutes after coming on and one he will feel he should have taken.

Strawbridge did well, surging down the right and delivering a pinpoint cross to Hutton, who headed over from close range.

Just moments later, and with 77min. now gone, it was nearly Hutton's moment again after he pounced on a poor Tom Tyler defensive header and lifted it over visiting keeper Ricky Bowey, but also the crossbar.

As it turned out, that would be GFC's last real chance of the afternoon, as despite looking desperately to get forward, attacks regularly broke down in the final third and the visiting defence looked comfortable.

Jamie Ellis was close to connecting with Luke Edwards' cross and doubling Chessington's lead, while Tardif did superbly well to get hands on the ball to deny Martin, as he looked to walk the ball into the net.

Bowey was called into action on a couple more occasions, but for nothing more than routine saves from ambitious efforts, as GFC ran out of ideas.

And with 3min. of stoppage time played, any lingering hopes were extinguished as Chessington made it 2-0 and completed GFC's first ever home league defeat by that margin.

The impressive Martin reached the byline and after beating Tardif to the ball, pulled back a cross which allowed substitute Lee Davidson to volley home into an empty net and put a fatigued GFC out of their misery.
