THERE was a joke going around fog-bound Guernsey yesterday morning that tonight's CCL Premier League match would be off.

The Green Lions wouldn't be able to get there as they would be still stuck at Gatwick.

It's fair to say Tony Vance's men aren't getting much luck this winter. First it was the wettest winter in modern times, now a fixture schedule from hell.

Throw in a broken leg for a star player, serious knee injuries, and a home pitch giving the impression that it's been hit by a helicopter – rather than dried out by one – and it's something of a minor miracle that the Green Lions lie second in the table.

The squad situation was dire enough before Wednesday's 4-2 defeat at Colliers Wood United – a result that surely ends the title dream for this year – that an SOS went out to 44-year-old club president Matt Le Tissier to drive up from Southampton and bring his boots. He would almost certainly get a game.
