HEATHER WATSON'S comeback to tennis was encouraging but ultimately frustrating as she was knocked out of the French Open in the first round yesterday.

Playing her first competitive match for more than two months after suffering from glandular fever, the 21-year-old Guernsey player was edged out 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 by Stefanie Voegele at Roland Garros.

'I felt a lot better out there today than I had done earlier in the year,' Watson said afterwards.

'It was enjoyable being back and I enjoyed playing, but there is still a lot of improvement to make on my fitness.

'I will use the rest of this week playing in the doubles and also in the gym to keep improving and then it is all about the grass court season, which I love.'
