SOME lesser-known riders will have the chance to make a name for themselves in the annual Mountain Bike Tour of Guernsey.

The eight-day event will see none of the island's top five mountain bikers compete as they are in Bermuda for the Island Games, but there are still hopes for a big entry.

Organised and run by the Guernsey Velo Club mountain bike committee under club rules, the event is open to anybody and starts on Sunday.

Just like the ongoing Tour de France, there are different-coloured jerseys for the leader of each category at the end of each of the seven stages.

Those consist of two cross-countries, a hill climb, a criterium, a duphill (combination of hill climb and downhill time trial), a time trial and a four cross, in various locations around the island.

  • To enter the Tour, go to www.mug.gg/events-fundraising and complete the entry form, or alternatively entry forms are available at Cycleworld and Adventure Cycles.
