GUERNSEY'S golden girls kept their nerve and secured a magnificent gold medal at the renowned Port Royal Golf Course yesterday.

The quartet of Aimee Ponte, Abigail Howard, Jan Chamberlain and Mandy Webber have all earned the right to say they were winners over four rounds at the course which the four major champions of each year face off in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf.

Having held the lead at the midway point in the competition, Chamberlain quietly admitted that the team were not allowed to talk of the possibility of gold, but added 'it's better to be in this position than not, it's good for our confidence too'.

How right she was and they can brag about this remarkable achievement now for years to come.

They finished as the only team to remain in triple figures as their three best scores over each of the four days came to an aggregate of 997, three strokes better off than silver medallists Isle of Wight and 12 better than third-placed Gotland.
