MILES MUNRO celebrated his call-up to a British Swimming sprint training camp in the best possible fashion.

The 17-year-old, pictured, claimed the National Youth Championships 50m freestyle title for the 17/18 age group in Sheffield, becoming the first Guernseyman to break the 23sec. barrier for the long-course event as he clocked a new island record of 22.88sec. on Sunday.

Munro also broke the island 100m long-course freestyle record at the championships with a 52.39, which qualified him for the 17/18 final on Saturday.

However, he and coach Alison Frankland took the decision to pull out of the 100m final and save himself for the 50m after the swimmer felt repetition pain in his shoulder.

'He was taking a chance doing the Nationals so soon after the Island Games. We did discuss it and he said that although he was at the bottom of the age group, he wanted to have a go to see how he could get on,' Frankland said.
