TOM DRUCE has come back to earth with a shuddering bump after one of the biggest highlights of his career to date.

Only long-established GB international Richard Buck could deny the Guernsey athlete a 400m gold medal at the big CAU Inter-Counties meeting at Bedford on Saturday, but no sooner had Druce produced the run of his season than he ripped a hip muscle which may delay the start of his preparations for the Commonwealth Games year and has left him barely able to walk.

Druce was very pleased with his silver medal at Bedford where he clocked 47.17sec. in poor conditions, as he explained.

'It was a very satisfying performance. The CAU Inter Counties is one of the most historic championships in this country so it is one of the most significant medals that I've won in my career.

'It is also pleasing to perform well over 400 again. The weather was poor all day on Saturday – cool, wet and windy. So, coupled with the fact that the final was only two-and-a-half hours after a heat in which I ran 47.50, the 47.17 was definitely worth a sub-47 on another day.'
