AFTER another new event was added to the motorsport calendar, Saturday's grasstrack meeting at Icart was considered an overwhelming success by the riders present.

With its serene background setting, around 15 riders entered the meeting, the first such event in a number of years on the island. They are all more used to the sand down on Vazon Beach and similar to the sand-racing format, each race on the day saw four riders compete per heat and after those were complete, the four riders with the most points entered the 'A' final and the next four to the 'B' final.

One of those to reach the elite quartet was veteran Dave Cleal who, now 63, has been racing for well over 40 years and can recall a few other instances when grasstrack came to Guernsey in the same vein.

'I remember doing a grasstrack meeting at the Track one time and another up at St Peter's, as well as one or two others,' he said.

'I don't get to go away to the UK that often for grasstrack races these days, so to get events over here like this that are different to the norm is brilliant.'
