TONY VANCE hailed the character of his Guernsey FC players after scrapping out three points that keep them right in the Ryman South promotion mix.

The Green Lions manager was speaking after watching his side grab a vital 2-1 win at Faversham Town, through teenage substitute Paris Pereira's 86th-minute winner, his first goal for the club.

It all means that GFC are back up to fifth in the table, with a two-point cushion over the play-off chasers below them, as well as having games in hand on every side around them.

Indeed, in terms of points dropped so far, they have the second-best record in the league and it was a good Saturday all round, as Crawley Down Gatwick and leaders Walton Casuals both dropped points.

Vance was a happy man at the end of the win at the Shepherds Neame Stadium.

'It was a good three points to pick up from what can probably best be described as an ugly match,' he said.

'It wasn't one that I would pay to watch, but at the end of the day, there will be occasions where you have games like that and you just have to get the job done.'
