THE island's track sprinters are aiming to be quick off the mark this winter and a contingent of GIAAC athletes are set to compete indoors in Sheffield for a Northern Athletics Open meeting this weekend.

With the Commonwealth Games looming large next year and with a qualifying cut-off of March, a number of Games hopefuls are targeting a big indoor season, in a bid to gain the required standards.

In a more typical year, GIAAC athletes would compete in a select number of meetings during the indoor season, which mainly runs from January through to March.

Josh Allaway, the GIAAC development officer and a leading member of the club's sprint group, outlined the reasoning behind the return to competition before the new year.

'The selection date has meant that we have begun our winter training eight weeks earlier than normal to prepare for the start of the indoor competitions, so we are all eager to begin competing having been back training for so long.

'The whole group has been training well, and everyone is injury free which is a bonus,' he added.
