ON THE day that Tony Vance used his programme notes to blast the online forum critics who question his players' commitment, the Green Lions rolled up their sleeves in the miserable conditions at Footes Lane and got their promotion charge back on track.

A fine 4-2 win over in-form Herne Bay was just their second in nine matches and it was enough to jump a place in the Ryman Isthmian South table and into sixth spot, one place outside the play-off places with a match in hand.

The GFC game was one of only five of the league's scheduled 12 to beat the weather, but Footes Lane, pilloried for its imitation of the reservoir last winter, held up superbly as the home team gave 724 loyal fans the perfect Christmas present.

GFC led 3-0 at the break after goals from Dave Rihoy, Dom Heaume and Ross Allen (penalty).

Herne Bay had a man sent off in the opening seconds of the second half and Allen made the game safe after Sam Hassler had pulled a goal back for the visitors.

Skipper Sam Cochrane was one who revelled in the wet and showed all his leadership qualities in a strong central-defensive partnership alongside Jamie Dodd.

'I enjoy it when the weather is against you like it was today. It's an extra challenge,' he said.
