ONE member of the Footes Lane crowd was happier than any other to see the Guernsey Rugby Club first XV beat Thurrock on Saturday.

Two weeks to the day after he had left the ground with a broken neck, a smiling Malcolm Barnes was sitting in the Garenne Stand watching his teammates get back to winning ways in National Three London & South-East.

The club's star scrum-half from New Zealand was happy to report good news regarding his operation, too.

'It all went well,' said 29-year-old Barnes, who suffered a dislocated and fractured vertebra in the 8-6 victory over Dorking and underwent surgery in Taunton five days later.

'The spinal specialist said everything was absolutely successful.

'In six weeks' time I go back to have another consultation and we are hoping after that that we can limit the use of the collar.

'I am hopeful of a full recovery with even the possibility of being able to play rugby again.'
