Oldest Muratti star impressed by Allen and GFC

TONY VANCE'S Green Lions and striker Ross Allen have been given the thumbs up by Guernsey's oldest living Muratti player.

At a very sprightly 95 years young, Ernie Sauvage, who won 15 Muratti caps between 1939 and 1955, was a special guest of match sponsors Saffery Champness at the Green Lions' 4-2 win over Eastbourne Town at Footes Lane on Saturday night.

He thoroughly enjoyed himself and afterwards got to hand over a bottle of bubbly to Ross Allen, the man of the match of his own choice.

Not only did he think a lot of GFC's star No. 10 who treated Sauvage and the 700-plus crowd to one of his specials, the old 'Upton' winning Northerner was impressed by the general play.

'There was more football than in my day – more controlled football.

'In my time there was a bit of kick and rush about it.'
