Glasgow-hopeful Wilesmith in excellent form

THERE was encouragement and frustration for local runners chasing Commonwealth Games standards across the UK at the weekend.

Mike Wilesmith has the tall order of running sub 2hrs 27min. to make the Games marathon standard and ahead of the forthcoming Barcelona Marathon showed himself to be in good shape with a personal best at the Brighton Half Marathon on Sunday.

In a field of 1,500 finishers Wilesmith came home 10th in a time of 71min. 40sec., 57sec. inside his previous best set at the Wokingham half-marathon in 2013.

Meanwhile, indoors at Birmingham at the National Indoor Arena, the pick of the performances came from sprinter Josh Allaway, who lowered his best for the 60m to 7.02.

Middle-distance runner Natalie Whitty was targeting the Glasgow Games 800 standard of 2-11 at the NIA, but had to settle for a 2-12.22 and second place.
