Mixed news on defensive front for Guernsey FC

ANGUS MACKAY rates his chances of playing in next month's Muratti Vase as '80-20 against', after confirmation that he has fractured his fifth metatarsal.

But, that bad news apart, the defensive crisis which has plagued GFC in the past few games, seems set to ease with the likely return of Jamie Dodd and Sam Cochrane this weekend.

After picking up the injury in Guernsey FC's draw at Hythe Town last week, the influential Mackay will now definitely miss the remainder of the Green Lions' Ryman South campaign.

'I seem to be really unlucky with injuries and this is my third different one this season, so it is incredibly frustrating for it to happen at this time of the season with some massive Ryman South matches and the Muratti to come.'

However, with the race for play-off spots close, there is good news for GFC with the imminent return of the captain Cochrane and Dodd to ease the centre-back crisis, both set to play at Worthing this coming Saturday.

By the time they play Saturday lunchtime, the Lions may have been pegged back to level points by in-form Merstham, who face a tricky trip to Hythe tonight, as the current situation now realistically sees five teams fighting for three play-off spots.

Peacehaven & Telscombe won the league title last weekend with another big win, while Leatherhead need just one more point from their final four games to secure one of the four spots in the 29 April semi-finals.

Despite GFC's form having fallen away recently, picking up just five points in six games, Cochrane remains confident of end-of-season success and has called upon some of his side's critics to now support the team to the full.

'I would like to think that we can finish the job off and although there is now pressure building, we have a group of players who will thrive under it in my view,' he said.
