The players are paramount says Sharman

STEVE SHARMAN went for a run yesterday afternoon to clear his head after the hectic build-up and excitement of Guernsey's fantastic record-breaking Muratti win at Springfield.

But it may take more than a bit of exercise to clear the minds of Jersey football's top brass as they reel from the triple blow of losing another Muratti in humbling fashion, their manager and coach walking out and their top players, almost to a man, calling for a more testing future which gets the best out of them.

'They haven't got a scooby-do' tweeted Jersey player Ben Gallichan.

But however Jersey react, Sharman said they must do it for the best reasons.

'Whichever direction Jersey choose to go it has got to be for the benefit of the players – nobody else.

'It has to be about players first and foremost,' is the Sharman mantra.

Meanwhile, more light has been shed on Craig Culkin's departure as Jersey manager.

It is believed that he and the JFA fell out earlier last week after a dispute over the inclusion of former professional Michael Weir – who had just returned to the island – in the Muratti final squad.

The JFA claim Weir's selection went against their principles but Culkin argues that they were preventing him from carrying out his job effectively.

Culkin, who led the Reds – in the guise of the Jersey Football Combination – to FA Inter-League Cup glory in April 2012, said last week's dispute was just the latest of many between himself and the executive committee.

'There have been three or four disagreements and that was the final straw,' he said following Jersey's 4-1 defeat to Guernsey.

'Every turn in the last few months, my job has been undermined and I think it's time for them to bring someone else in who is possibly a yes-man.

'The job prerequisites should be someone bland, boring, with no personality who agrees with what they're looking for.'
