IT WAS Guernsey's sailors who showed the required skill to dominate the Carey Olsen Inter-Island Yacht Race on a virtually windless day.

Only 19 boats made it to the finish line of the 78 that started, with many being stranded in sight of the finish line but unable to reach it.

But 11 of those who did were Sarnian crews, as they comfortably outperformed their Jersey rivals on the St Peter Port to St Helier course.

Seven of the top-10 overall were Guernsey boats.

Among the successes was Banjaard, which was the overall winning boat and skippered by John Falla, who won the main trophy for the first time.

He was delighted to achieve success with his crew and was grateful to see his tactics pay off in such spectacular fashion.

'I have had some good wins in different events in the past, but this is the one that everybody in local sailing wants to win,' he said.
