Isabelle slams negative Brazilian tactics

GUERNSEY'S run in the Gothia Cup came to an end at the last-64 stage yesterday, but Jacques Isabelle hailed his side's efforts in a frustrating defeat.

The Sarnian under-15s qualified unbeaten as top of their initial round-robin group and then dispatched Bollstanos in style in the last-128, winning 5-0.

But against Brazilian side Space/Ordin, they fell behind through a goal early into the second half and despite hitting the woodwork twice, could not find an equaliser.

However, coach Isabelle was proud of his players and was glad they didn't stoop to some of the tactics used by their opponents.

'To say they were Brazilian and you expect flair and attacking football from sides in that region, they were the most negative team I have ever seen in football,' he said.

'And when they got their goal, their only tactic was to kick the ball as far out of play as they possibly could and make us go and get it, which with one ball and a rolling clock is pathetic,' he added.
