Let the 20th Commonwealth Games begin

'GUID LUCK' were the final heartfelt words to the record 4,000 plus competitors after a spectacular opening ceremony for the 20th Commonwealth Games in Celtic Park.

On an evening more associated with the Gold Coast, venue for the 21st Games in four years time, rather than Glasgow, rightly or wrongly associated with dark skies and often a mood to match, the home of Celtic Football Club was as hot as the weather.

Guernsey's small team of athletes and officials received a hearty cheer from a stadium largely full of Scots, many of the older ones who may well recall that their city was home to many, many islanders during the Occupation years.

It was after 11pm when Her Majesty the Queen declared the Games officially open, by which time some of the Guernsey team were handing back to the Athletes Village having experienced the lifetime thrill of being part of the parade of nations, but being in action early today were in need of an early night and rest a few vital limbs.

On the opening day of competition, Guernsey are represented in lawn bowls, badminton, swimming and squash.
