Chris Simpson swept through two rounds of the men's singles, beating Julian Jervis of Cayman for the loss of 12 points, and then seeing off Colin Ramasra from Trinidad and Tobago.

'Day one successfully negotiated with a little left in the tank,' Simpson said last evening ahead of a potentially very difficult third-round clash against his good friend and recent practice partner, the Australian Ryan Cuskelly.

Meanwhile, in the 10-lane 50m Tollcross pool, Miles Munro produced the Guernsey performance of the day, slaughtering the island 50m butterfly record which had been set by Ian Powell four years ago.

Munro, at 18 the youngest in his semi-final, had surprised himself with a 25.16sec. in the heats, just three hundredths outside Powell's time, before he took the record down to 24.49 with an amazing swim to place seventh in his semi-final.

It was a good all-round day for the island in the water with Tom Hollingsworth and Luke Belton both enjoying fine swims in the 200 breaststroke, both men quick enough to make the top 16. In the case of young Belton it was with a huge PB.

Meanwhile, down in the scenic surroundings of Kelvingrove, the Guernsey men's triples overcame a cruel last-gasp defeat by New Zealand in the morning to defeat Zambia in the afternoon and it was a similar story for Lucy Beere, who lost to home favourite Caroline Brown before beating Bernice McGreal from the Isle of Man.

In badminton, as expected the seeded teams of New Zealand and Scotland proved too strong for Guernsey, who were beaten 5-0 in both matches.
