Island records keep falling at Commonwealth Games

MILES MUNRO departs his first Commonwealth Games knowing he is 12th fastest freestyle swimmer in the Commonwealth after falling just short of his own island record and a place in the final of the 50m freestyle.

At Tollcross last night Munro clocked 22.82 on the back of a good start to finish sixth in the second semi-final, beating many top-quality major swimming nation representatives in the process as well the former Olympic swimmer from Cayman, Brett Fraser, who finished more than half a second ahead of the Guernsey youngster in claiming gold at the 2013 Island Games in Bermuda.

Meanwhile, Courtney Butcher, just 16, set a new island record in the 50 backstroke and was one place shy if making the semi-finals, while James Jurkiewicz also worse a smile after a big PB in the 200 backstroke heats.

Sarah Mercier's first taste of Commonwealth action also brought a big PB and new island record in front of a packed house of 40,000 at Hampden.

'I don't know quite how that happened,' she said after, but there was only misery for fellow runner Tom Druce whose current injury problems caught up with him in the 400m.
