Swimmers finish off Glasgow meet in style

THEY have been setting island records either side of the weekend and Guernsey's swimmers were doing so right until the end of their Games in the Tollcross pool in the East End of Glasgow.

The men's 4x100 medley relay squad of James Jurkiewicz, Luke Belton, Tom Hollingsworth and Miles Munro smashed the old mark set in Delhi four years ago by nearly two seconds.

The Delhi team contained Ian Powell, until now rated as the island's all-time best male swimmer, but the team in Scotland have again shown how island swimming continues to advance and with a time of 3-52.89 for 10th place out of 14 nations, it was a fitting finale for the team coached by Alison Frankland.

There was good news for Guernsey, too, in the badminton at the Emirates Stadium, James Roe in the mountain biking, both Alice Loveridge and Dawn Morgan in the table tennis and shooter Nick Mace.

Elena Johnson and Gayle Lloyd both moved into the second round of the women's singles, while Loveridge won her qualifying pool to reach the knockout stage at Scotstoun as did Morgan.

On the breezy slopes of Cathkin Braes, high above the city, James Rowe rode his heart, lungs and legs out to finish a superb 14th in the mountain biking.

Roe was the only one of five CI riders to finish all seven gruelling laps.

Out at Barry Buddon on the east coast there was heartbreak for Jersey's two rifle shooters Barry Le Cheminant and Dan Richardson who started the last day of the Queen's Prize event in first and second, only to tumble down the field in the strong winds.

Mace, though, coped well at the notorious 1,000 yard last range and rose to eighth lace, finishing above Richardson and one spot behind Le Cheminant.

There was disappointment, though, on the bowls greens at Kelvingrove where Matt Le Ber suffered back-to-back losses to crash out of the singles.
