Classy Zhang proves too strong for Loveridge at Commonwealth Games

ALICE LOVERIDGE had the misfortune to draw the current Commonwealth Championships title-holder in yesterday's last-32 round of the women's singles at Glasgow 2014, but the Guernsey table tennis star showed what a fine player she is in her own right before succumbing in quick time to the tournament's dark horse, fifth-seed Mo Zhang of Canada.

The Canadian won in straight sets 11-8, 11-3, 11-5, 11-6, leaving the Guernsey star to admit that her opponent was plainly too good.

'Pretty tasty,' was her first thought on Zhang.

'I just wanted to go out and rally and compete with her and in the first set I did to keep up with her.

'But she's got that extra bit of bite in her shots.'

Apart from the exits of Loveridge and Dawn Morgan at Scotstoun, the badminton contingent lost in the early rounds at the Emirates.

Matt Le Ber, though, finished his bowls singles campaign on a winning note, beating Munokokura Pita, from the Cook Islands.

Meanwhile, sprinter Tom Druce headed home to the West Country after it became apparent that his hamstring was not up to the rigours of a flat out 200m.
