McLaughlin up with the elite in Glasgow 2014 time trial

FIFTH place at the National Championships suggested strongly that James McLaughlin would be able to challenge the very best in the Commonwealth and yesterday he proved it.

McLaughlin finished a brilliant 10th in a field of 60 in the 38.4km time trial and in so doing so finished ahead of one of the Team Sky professional riders – Luke Rowe – and just two places lower in the final standings than the big Scottish hope for the event, David Millar, the defending champion from Delhi, and just one place adrift of one of the big Aussie hopes, Luke Durbridge, the former world under-23 champion.

McLaughlin said he was 'pretty proud' of his performance.

'There were 11 or 12 pro tour riders and I managed to beat a couple of them and be within a few seconds of the likes of David Millar and Luke Durbridge.

'Hopefully, in four years' time, I'd like to think I will be further up.'

Aaron Bailey finished 22nd in 55-52.17 and Matt Osborn came 32nd in 58-40.72.

Jo Watts lead home the Sarnians in the women's time trial, finishing 22nd in 48min. 49.15sec., 13 seconds ahead of Ann Bowditch and just under a minute quicker than Karina Bowie.

In table tennis, Canada's medal hopes put a full stop to the Games for women's doubles pairing Alice Loveridge and Dawn Morgan at Scotstoun yesterday afternoon.

In the morning the Guernsey combination had worked very well together to beat two hard-hitting young Sri Lankans in the first round.

In athletics, last night at Hampden Park Kylie Robilliard was unable to match her recent island-record-breaking feats and clocked 14.20sec. in her 100m hurdles heat.

There are no Guernsey competitors in action in Glasgow today. Over the weekend, Sarah Mercier returns to the track tomorrow for the women's 5,000m final while on Sunday the cyclists are back in action for the men's and women's road races.
